Sakura Wars 1: Ouka Kenran

Act 1: The Demon Wars Begin Again

The terrible Demon Wars that had threatened to tear Japan asunder have come to an end. As the Imperial Capital rebuilds from the devastation that the war left in its wake, the thoughts of Count Hanakogi and Mr. Yoneda weigh heavily on what measures should be taken to ensure such horrific destruction does not transpire again. With the industrial might of Kanzaki Heavy Industries behind them, an intricate strategy for the defense of the Imperial Capital is formulated to keep the forces of darkness at bay.

As Major Ayame Fujieda gathers talent from across the globe, the prototype for the “Spirit Armor” is being tested at Kanzaki Heavy Industries. Despairing over the fact that none of the soldiers the Army has provided possess the spiritual power to move the Koubu, their hopes are soon lifted with the arrival of Sumire Kanzaki, the young granddaughter of the owner of Kanzaki Heavy Industries and a girl of enormous spiritual power. To the jubilation of everyone present, the armor finally moved and the mecha that would defend the Imperial Capital from evil was finally born.

The Capital Defense Program pushes forward, with Major Fujieda continuing her recruitment of girls that possess the spiritual capabilities needed to power and fight with the Spirit Armor; as well as the groundbreaking of the Great Imperial Theater, which will serve as cover as the future base of operations for the Flower Division. Meanwhile, in Sendai, young Sakura Shinguji, daughter of Colonel Kazuma Shinguji, continues her training in hopes of gaining the right to carry her father’s sword- the Spirit Sword Arataka.

As the Flower Division enjoys their first assignment, an outing to a local festival, their peaceful afternoon is shattered by the arrival of a ferocious demon. The demon descends upon the festival and goes after Iris, who decides to flex her spiritual powers and toy with the rampaging monster; teleporting all over the festival grounds as the monster pursues her vigorously. The demon’s attack is soon repulsed thanks to the efforts of Iris, Kohran, and Maria, and the sanctity of Tokyo is restored- for now.

Act 2: The Cherry Blossom Spirit Attack

It’s training day for the Flower Division, but battle tactics are not exactly the item on today’s menu. The girls are learning traditional dance routines, which, in Japanese folklore, were used for warding off evil spirits. When dances were performed by pure maidens, the effect against evil spirits was even more potent. There is a certain urgency to their training, as reports continue to creep in that the forces of darkness are preparing to make their move against the Imperial Capital.

Elsewhere, in Sendai, Sakura Shinguji begins her training in the Northern Long Blade style, in hopes of learning the Spirit Sword Arataka’s special technique, the Cherry Blossom Attack. Sakura, having received guidance from Arataka, has decided to go and defend Tokyo like her father before her, but first she must master her training before she may be permitted to leave her home. Elsewhere, Sumire is awoken from her slumber by a demon who managed to infiltrate her bedroom. After repulsing the demon, Ayame, who had been observing the scene from her balcony, asks Sumire to join the Flower Division.

Sumire is greeted warmly by her new comrades, however she scoffs at them after Kanna claims to be her superior. Sumire relates how if it weren’t for her, the Spirit Armor would have never been invented and proclaims herself as the “superior,” thus beginning Sumire and Kanna’s infamous rivalry. Maria despairs over her inability to truly unite the Flower Division, while Kanna runs away in order to avenge the death of her father.

His force now depleted due to Kanna’s departure, Lieutenant General Yoneda is forced to seek out a replacement to replenish the Flower Division’s battle strength. Arriving at the Shinguji home, General Yoneda asks Sakura’s mother and grandmother for permission to take Sakura under his supervision as a member of the Flower Division. Yoneda’s request is refuted, as Sakura’s mother claims that she is not yet ready to depart. Yoneda goes to watch Sakura attempt to train in trying to perform the Cherry Blossom Attack, and volunteers to be her target. Successful, she is now ready to journey to the Imperial Capital, Tokyo, and join the Flower Division.

Act 3: Spring is the Time for First Battles

Sakura arrives in Tokyo with a bang, defeating a giant mechanical monster that was attacking a park. Tales of her daring exploits spread like wildfire through the Imperial Capital, with merchants already trying to cash in on the event. Meanwhile, Sakura marvels at the performance taking place at the Imperial Theater, dreaming of the day when she, too, will be allowed to shine on the stage.

The big field test of the Spirit Armor by the Flower Division takes place with favorable results, that is, with the exception of Sakura, who hasn’t quite gotten the hang of piloting the Koubu as of yet. As Sakura sulks over her failure, Maria confronts Ayame about finding someone to replace her as Captain of the Flower Division. Maria feels that she is not capable of leading the girls in a way that would bring out their full potential, and would better serve as an assistant commander. Ayame suggests a male for this role, on the basis that a young man their age would serve as a catalyst to unite all of the girls’ hearts into one.

As Maria and Manager Yoneda muse over putting Sakura on the stage, the forces of darkness begin to stir restlessly in the darkness of the night. While Lord Tenkai vows to wreak havoc on Tokyo, Sumire is wreaking some havoc of her own after learning that Sakura has been given a part in the Flower Division’s upcoming production. Before the matter can be resolved however, the enemy finally launches their attack on the Imperial Capital and force the Flower Division in to their first battle as a combat unit.

Leaving Sakura in reserve, Maria, Sumire, and Iris advance to meet the enemy force, which has firmly entrenched themselves on the Souki Bridge. With their formation broken, the Flower Division’s attack goes completely awry- inflicting more collateral damage to the surrounding area than against the enemy force. Surrounded with no means of escape, the enemy brings forth a powerful steam cannon to finish off the ensnared Flower Division. With her comrades’ lives hanging in the balance, it’s up to the inexperienced Sakura to try and rescue her teammates before they’re torn to pieces.

Act 4: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Fresh out of the naval academy, Imperial Navy Lieutenant Ichirou Ohgami arrives in Tokyo and assumes command of the Flower Division. Through his commendable leadership, Ohgami manages to unify the Flower Division in to a cohesive fighting unit; worthy of taking on the fierce Black Roots of Evil which threaten to consume the Imperial Capital. When not vanquishing the forces of evil, Ohgami finds himself working hard at helping the rest of the girls carry out the daily chores needed to keep the Imperial Theater in top form.

Whether it’s playing Hanafuda with Kohran, cleaning the stage with Sakura, or rescuing Sumire from drowning- Ohgami persistently tries to live up to the huge responsibility placed on him as the Captain of the Flower Division. After working so diligently in seeing that all of the girls’ needs are met, the Flower Division begins to worry about their poor commander over-exerting himself and decide to take it easy on him.

Ohgami is invited to plan the next big production for the Flower Division, so that he can take part in bringing happiness to the people like the girls do. Ohgami decides that he wants to put on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and after receiving permission from Manager Yoneda, sets to work with the rest of the Flower Division on preparing for the big performance. Everyone worked hard and the curtain was finally ready to be drawn and make Ohgami’s big dream come true.

As the performance was about to get under way however, the Black Roots of Evil decided to launch an attack. An attack now would force the play to be cancelled and everyone’s hard work would have been for naught. Ohgami stops Ayame from sounding the battle alarm and gallantly goes to face the evil mechanized army on his own. Just as the curtain is about to rise, the girls overhear Yoneda scolding Ayame for permitting Ohgami to do such a thing. With their Captain's life in serious danger, the Flower Division cancels the play and rushes to their Captain’s side. But will they make it in time?
